뉴베리 상이란? 

뉴베리 상(Newbery Awards)은 미국 아르아르보커 출판사 출판사의 멜쳐(Frederic G. Melcher) 가 영국 최초로 어린이를 위한 책을 출판하였던 18세기 영국 출판 상인인 존 뉴베리(1713-1767)의 이름을 따 아동문학도 시나 희곡, 소설 등과 같은 평가를 받을 수 있도록 하자는 취지에서  미국 도서관 협회(The American Library Association) 에 요청하여 1922년 제정하였다. 이는 미국에서 아동 문학에 큰 공헌을 한 작품의 미국인 작가에게 수여되는 상으로 미국 도서관 협회 아동 도서 부문과 ALSC (the Association for Library Service to Children) 에서 매년 초에 미국 시민 및 거주자인 작가에 한해 그 전년도에 출판된 아동 도서들 중 뛰어난 책에 수여한다. 1938년 제정된 어린이 그림책 대상의 칼데콧 상과 함께 최고 권위의 아동문학상으로 꼽힌다. 뉴베리 메달과 더불어 거의 비슷한 수준으로 경합을 벌인 서너 개의 작품에도 뉴베리 아너 즉, 명예상을 부여한다. 한국에서 "노벨트에서 평범한 건 없어" 로 번역된 Dead End in Norvelt 는 2012년 아동문학상 뉴베리 메달 수상작으로 역사소설 부문에서 Scott O'Dell 상 또한 수상한 인기 소설이다. 이는 작가 Jack Gantos의 자서전적인 소설이기도 한데 역사적인 사실과 교묘한 유머의 요소가 어우러져 이야기의 매력을 더한다.

범상치 않은 책 제목(Title): 'Dead End' 는 '막다른 길' 이란 뜻이고 Norvelt 는 펜실바니아의 한 타운이름인데, 1934년 처음 지어졌는데 대공황 때 실업자들과 그 가정에 집, 직장, 그리고 커뮤니티를 제공하였다. Franklin D. Roosevelt 의 대통령 재임시 영부인 Eleanor Roosevelt 가 이 프로젝트에 적극적인 관심을 보여 타운 이름을 영부인의 이름 끝자를 각각 따서 1937년 Norvelt 라고 지었다고 한다.

                     Rena Dubicki, a Leader of RNOH Club, Dies at 83

      There has been another death in Norvelt as always, however, this woman wasn’t like any other. Rena Dubicki, who died today at the age of eighty-three was a great woman. Mrs. Dubicki was born in Norvelt, Pennsylvania in 1876. She worked hard to make things right. Whenever someone needed help, she was there. She was a healthy, strong woman until… So today, in honor of her name, the least we could do is go to the sanctuary and pray that she will live forever, up there with God. She was a part of the “RNOH” club which stood for, Roosevelt needs our help. She provided food for the poor to help all Norvelters. Then, a tragedy occurred.  She got the influenza and eventually went in an internal sleep.

      Her childhood wasn’t so happy either. On her 5th birthday, her parents wanted to surprise her by moving to Florida. They took a ferry, but when they got there, she was gone. Mrs. Dubicki’s parents looked everywhere for her, but she was nowhere to be found. Two years later, her parents gave up in looking for her and she was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Glorne, who gave her the name, Rena Glorne. Her original name was Charlette Bickel.    

       She married in her 30’s to a handsome, strong man named Austin Dubicki. As a result of his strength, he had to fight for the army to provide food and money, and after his years serving the army, he lead the mines. Years later, Mrs. Dubicki gave birth to a boy and a girl, Mike and Sarah Dubicki. Her children went off their own path, got married and then moved to Florida for safety. She lived a happy life with her husband until he died exactly 2 years away from today because of a mine explosion. According to her childhood and life experience, she deserves to be in heaven, where she will take care of Norvelt with Eleanor Roosevelt.
