[라이프롱잉글리쉬] 영어 원서 '원더(Wonder)' 북리뷰

Wonder 는 선천적 두개안면 기형의 얼굴(Craniofacial Abnormality)을 가졌지만 나름 유머감각이 뛰어나고 스타워즈의 광팬이며 애완견을 사랑하는 10세의 절대 평범하지 않은 주인공 Auggie (August Pullman)라는 소년이 Beecher Prep School 5학년에 들어가면서 시작되는 이야기이다.

작가 소개

남편과 두 아들, 그리고 두마리의 개와 함께 뉴욕에 살고있는 작가 R.J. Palacio 는 NPR 과의 인터뷰에서 Wonder 라는 이야기를 쓰게 된 계기를 솔직히 털어놓았다. 어느날 아이스크림 가게에서 3살짜리 막내 아들이 자기 옆에 앉은 심각한 기형의 얼굴을 가진 어린 소녀를 보고 놀라 우는 것을 보고 자기도 모르게 아들을 데리고 도망치듯 그자리를 떴다고 한다. Palacio 는 후에 자신의 행동에 매우 화가 났고 후회를 했으며 아이스크림 가게에서 본 소녀에 대한 미안한 마음으로 안면기형의 얼굴을 가진 아이에 대한 이야기를 쓰기로 결심했다고 한다.

이 책이 인기있는 몇가지 이유를 들자면, 

첫째, 선천성 안면기형이 있는 주인공 Auggie 이지만 동물을 사랑하고 남다른 유머 감각을 지닌 지극히 인간미 넘치는 사랑할 수 밖에 없는 캐릭터를 읽으며 독자는 반성하고 공감하고 편들게까지 된다.

둘째, 왕따의 주인공 Auggie 뿐 아니라, 그의 누나와 친구 등 제 삼자의 입장에 서서, 같은 한 사건을 두고 저마다 각각 어떻게 해석하는지 인간의 이면들을 역력히 보여주었다.

세째, 주인공 Auggie 를 통해 순수하고 솔직한 감성의 아이들 세계의 이야기로 펼쳐가며 작가는 무거운 주제, 즉 인간의 진정한 아름다움은 내면에 있다는 메세지를 우리에게 전하고 있다.

남녀노소 할 것 없이 '외모 지상주의'에 살고 있는 우리라 해도 과언이 아닌 현대 사회에 돌을 던지는 이야기로 장애인들, 특히 안면기형의 아이들의 소외감과 그를 대하는 우리의 시각과 태도를 바로 잡을 수 있는 기회를 마련하는 계기가 된 소설이라 할 수 있다.
